LAMP Packaging: Regulation (CFR) 49, part 173.166 Unbroken lamps must be packaged in cardboard boxes or fiber drums with the openings secured to prevent breakage. Broken Lamps must be packaged in DOT specification metal or plastic drums with the lids secured. An additional service charge will be invoiced for any sorting, packaging, repackaging or cleanup of customer material.
The easiest and most efficient method of packaging spent lamps for recycling is simply to put the old lamp back into the new lamp box as you replace them. Do not place the eggshell separators back in the box. Do not mix different types of lamps together. Tape the lamp box shut, with clear carton tape in case any lamps become broken it will hold the contents inside the box. Stack them on a normal shipping pallet criss-crossing every other row, no more than 66” high, and shrink wrap boxes to pallet. Each pallet should be labeled USED MERCURY LAMPS FOR RECYCLE, or UNIVERSAL WASTE MERCURY LAMPS
Do not store outside or allow boxes to get wet, badly damaged boxes, wet boxes, etc will not be accepted for transport.
